outreach

Founders Rishita Nandagiri & Joe Strong ran a well-attended and lively book club at the 2022 British Society of Abortion Care Providers conference.

We discussed John Bart’s Middenrammers. A book we first read in April 2021, Middenrammers focuses on the experiences of healthcare providers in a Yorkshire fishing town in the 1970s. Grappling with abortion and reproductive stigma, misogyny, class, and underfunded health and social care, the book highlights how far (or not) things have moved since the 1970s.

Attendees, including abortion providers and pro-choice medical students, reflected on how abortion continues to be sidelined in medical education and service. They also remarked on how, even 50-odd years later, many of the challenges detailed by John Bart remain.
