about us

// the project

abortion & other stories;’ is a collaborative, public project conceptualised by Joe & Rishita.

the project examines depictions and understandings of abortion across research, advocacy, policy, and media. engaging with activists, academics, authors, policymakers, providers, and journalists, we collectively re-imagine and re-conceptualise abortion.

the project includes:

  • the abortion book club, which discusses and challenges depictions of abortion in fiction. founded in 2020, this transnational (and zero pressure!) book club holds monthly meetings.

  • the abortion & srh seminar series, where activists, practitioners, and academics present and share their cutting-edge work on abortion, reproduction, and related topics.

  • policy-related organising, such as around the 2021 consultation on telemedicine in the UK.

We are working on & dreaming up new ideas. stay tuned!

//two abortion nerds meet in a phd programme…

Rishita & Joe have been scheming about abortion-related projects since 2018, when they bonded over being ‘those abortion people’ during their PhD studies. In 2020, after spending about fifty minutes dissecting Portrait of a Lady on Fire, they decided to finally get on with it & just start ‘abortion & other stories;’.

Joe Strong (he/him)
Founder

Joe is a PhD Candidate at the LSE researching the relationship between men, masculinities, emergency contraception and abortion. Besides overthinking masculinities, his other specialities include making abortion jokes to normal people and being told he has no shame. tweets @joestrongdemog

Rishita Nandagiri (she/her)
Founder

Rishita is a Lecturer at KCL. Her research, grounded in Global South feminisms, focuses on abortion and reproductive (in) justice. When she isn’t obsessing over structural inequities that surround abortion, she is gossiping about tennis & trying to understand TikTok. tweets @rishie_.
